Spartia, southwest of Argostoli, has authentic Greece written all over it. The narrow streets are lined with rustic houses surrounded by lovely gardens full of flowers, the main church is in a small central square and there are a few traditional taverns. A preserved street of original old houses and ruins allows a nostalgic view of ‘old’ Kefalonia. It’s the sort of place where you can really set your watch to go-slow and enjoy the peace and quiet.

It’s just a few minutes drive from the centre of the village to the seashore – though many visitors enjoy walking down from the village through the lush countryside. Here, there is a duo of sheltered beaches on either side of a little fishing jetty. The sandy beach is perfect for children while the rocky point and outcrops and the clear water creates an ideal area for snorkelling. Kayaking is popular in this area as the coastline is untouched and dramatic. The restaurant that overlooks the beach is great for a lunch accompanied by beautiful sea views. The wider area has many superb beaches with very clear water. The capital Argostoli and the airport are just a short driving distance away.
